In the area around Torre Guaceto, in the province of Brindisi in Apulia – Italy’s heel – Fiaschetto tomatoes are grown. They are a historic agricultural product in this area which are now a Slow Food presidium, as they were close to vanishing in the late 20th century, supplanted by more profitable and productive varieties. Today, the Fiaschetto variety is grown organically in the Torre Guaceto WWF nature reserve and in some neighbouring towns by growers who believed in bringing it back.
